The VLC provides access to courses in a FLEXIBLE and STUDENT-CENTERED format.  The VLC website listing of courses provides students with the access to a variety of courses available from the 28 Michigan community colleges.  In order to make the student's decision-making process as easy as possible, the VLC must agree on guidelines that will be followed when placing courses on the website.  Course information that is inaccurate or incomplete does not provide the quality of service we want to extend to the residents of Michigan and beyond.  

The VLC members are encouraged to follow these guidelines for adding courses to the website - either within the course catalog or course schedule - so that the highest quality of information is available to potential students. 

  1. If any course requires on-campus sessions, students living at a distance from the college need to be aware of these requirements.  Colleges that wish to place these courses on the VLC website MUST note ANY on-campus sessions in both the course catalog (in the description) and in the course schedule (in both the description and the course syllabus) so that students are aware of those restrictions on the course. 

  2. Colleges should offer alternatives to students who can not attend an on-campus orientation.  On-campus orientations should not be mandatory for courses listed in the VLC online catalog and colleges should have a web-based or computer-based orientation to provide to VLC students.  A basic orientation to online learning is available on the MCCVLC web site.

  3. Students have the option of purchasing their textbooks through the Provider School, Home School or several major vendors.  To assist students, the course description should include the ISBN number in the textbook information.

  4. If proctored tests are required, then that must be noted in the course description.  Students should be directed - by the instructor - to the VLC web page on how to set up proctored tests at their home institutions.

  5. The information regarding technology requirements should be checked for accuracy.

  6. Any course schedule added to the VLC should have all information complete and all links working.  Incomplete course information does not portray a quality product for either the college or the VLC.

  7. The most crucial link to work is for the course syllabus.  This url must link to a page that provides information about the course only.  Links that go to course sites that require a password to enter, or that go to an instructor's home page do not provide the information in a quality setting for the student. 

  8. Suggested information to include in the course syllabus or course information link include: Course Description, Specific Course Objectives, Instructor Information (including telephone number, fax number, email address and US mail address), Course Requirements (Technical, Academic Pre-requisites, Software, etc.), Course Overview (how the course will run, instructor expectations of the student, faculty-student interaction, etc.) and Testing (Requirements for proctoring, etc.).  Other items to consider including are Grading policy and Class schedule.

  9. Finally, review and check all information prior to placing on the VLC website from semester to semester as there are changes with both the information and the links to information.  The goal is to provide the most accurate, up-to-date, and complete information possible for the student.
