Date 4/9/2014
Time 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Notes/Description Students who underestimate the time and effort needed to successfully complete an online course tend to drop out or under-perform. Macomb Community College has implemented five initiatives to help reduce drop rates and increase student success, which have received overwhelming positive feedback form students and faculty. First administrators created a sample online course students can take to understand what an online course entails. They opened online classes early, which helped administrators manage enrollment, and students could see what they were getting into. Students must complete a face-to-face or online orientation using the learning management system so they can become familiar with it. Finally, staff provided information to help faculty clearly communicate expectations, time management, and study skills so students could be successful online.
