The Under Secretary of Education, Ted Mitchell, announced that the Department would not meet a November 1st deadline to develop new rules on state authorization of distance education programs. The new rules were the next step after the Negotiated Rulemaking Panel could not come to a consensus on regulations.
“We, for all intents and purposes, are pausing on state authorization,” Mitchell said during remarks at the Council for Higher Education Accreditation conference. “It’s complicated, and we want to get it right.”
