NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Higher Education Edition
Posted: 2/7/2014 - 10:02 AM
The annual survey of educational technology trends and how they impact higher education was released this week by the New Media Consortium. This year the panel of 56 experts provided the usual list of 6 technologies that will impact higher education within the next 5 years - and they also looked at key trends that are accelerating technology adoption along with the major impediments to technology adoption.
Those technology trends that we should see adoption of within the next year or less included flipped classrooms and learning analytics. Technologies that will see adoption in two to three years were 3D printing and gamification. Those technologies that will see adoption, or drop off the map, in four to five years were virtual assistants and quantified self.
The key trends that were accelerating technology adoption included social media's expansion into education and the blending of online and collaborative learning with face-to-face instructions. The lack of digital fluency by faculty and the absence of rewarding faculty for technology usage were seen as major challenges to technology adoption.
