The US Department of Education released draft rules regarding state authorization rules for online programs. The new rule - that replaces an original rule from 2010 that was overturned by the courts on technicalities - will recognize state reciprocity agreements as evidence of state authorization. But there is another change from the previous rule, that will require all states to have regulations in place for online learning. Currently, seventy-five percent of states including Michigan do not regulate purely online programs. The proposed rule will require states to regulate online education - which will require institutions to seek approval from states that they have already been approved in.
The proposed rules will be debated by the panel negotiators, the last week of March.
