The Office of Inspector General released a new report critical of the U.S. Education Department's regulations regarding distance education programs and the waste of federal financial aid dollars due to students who fraudulently enroll in online courses and never attend them.  The key areas of risk identified in the report included verification of the student's identity in an an online course, the determination of appropriate student academic attendance for federal aid disbursement and the cost of attendance for students enrolled in online programs.
